Shortly after Jon Jones defeated Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 128 to capture the UFC light heavyweight title, it was announced that Jones would face "Suga" Rashad Evans in his first title defense.
Jones and Evans had been training partners at Greg Jackson's MMA in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The two had said that they would never fight each other, but when Evans had to bow out of his scheduled fight against Rua at UFC 128 it was Jones who stepped in to take his place, defeating Rua in decisive fashion.
After the fight it was clear that the lure of UFC gold had changed the fighter's stance as Evans said, "I guess you should never say never, right?"
Since that time Evans has left the Jackson MMA camp. He has also implied that the split has more to do with Jones, as he has referred to the new light heavyweight champion as "Judas Jones" on twitter.
One fighter that has trained with both Jones and Evans is current UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.
St-Pierre spoke to the Canadian Press regarding the situation, offering the following, "It's a pretty weird situation right now."
St-Pierre continued, "I was in Albuquerque not too long ago and both guys were there. And unfortunately Rashad got hurt and I was there when it happened."
St-Pierre then added his name to the growing list of fighters that would not fight a friend, "I would not fight a friend but it happens sometimes that I have two friends that are fighting each other. It's kind of an awkward situation," St-Pierre said.
St-Pierre will defend his UFC welterweight title against Jake Shields on April 30 at UFC 129.
At this time, there is no date set for the Jones versus Evans title fight.
