FX debuts its new boxing drama "Lights Out" tonight (10 p.m. ET/PT). So far the reviews are mixed. Someone at NPR called the show a "total knockout" and possibly the best new TV drama of 2011.
The star of the TV series is Holt McCallany, playing heavyweight champ Patrick Leary. In the opening scene, his wife Theresa (Catherine McCormack) begs him to retire after a brutal loss in the ring. He does, and the series cuts to five years later. Patrick's ex-boxer brother, played by Pablo Schreiber, is now his business manager, and their father runs a local boxing gym that Patrick bought with his prize money. But that money — as Patrick admits to his dad, played by a perfectly crusty Stacy Keach — has all dried up.
David Bianculi says McCallany is believable in the role.
That's a huge key in movies or television shows based on real life sports. There's nothing worse than watching someone like Keanu Reeves throw a football or the dude (Victor Love), who played Hank Gathers in the "The Hank Gathers Story," dunk on what looked like an eight-foot rim.
On the flip side, John Kubicek, at something called BuddyTV, doesn't sound like a fan of the show. He also doesn't sound like a fan of boxing. Frankly, we're not even sure if he saw any advanced screenings.
Here's a more entensive video preview of the show and you can follow "Lights Out" on the producer's blog.
Boxing legends gathered last week at Grand Central Station in New York City to mark the debut of the show.
