Darron Gibson is far from the most popular Manchester United player, so his decision to set up a direct link to the fans in the form of a Twitter account was a very risky one. And, less than two hours after Gibson set up his @dgibbo28 account and had it promoted by Rio Ferdinand to his nearly 850,000 followers, the midfielder apparently realized he didn't like reading a continuous stream of insults and deleted the account.

Meanwhile, another controversial Man United player, Wayne Rooney, also just set up his own Twitter account on Saturday. He seems to be much better at ignoring the abuse, though, and his account remains an active platform for Wayne's unfiltered self-expression. And so the countdown to the day his management team wishes he pulled a Darron Gibson begins...
UPDATE: After Gibson's name became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter, he has come up with a story and issued a statement to intrepid Twitter reporter Rio Ferdinand. Rio tweets:
Darron Gibson says he came on to see what the lads were up to....he came off because he couldn't be bothered with it not any other reason.
So it was the abuse that drove him away, then. Going to the trouble of creating and then deleting an account just to "see what the lads were up to" for two hours doesn't make sense. Especially when you can read tweets without signing up. At the very least, he could have said that it wasn't until after he signed up that he saw Ashton Kutcher was on there and immediately decided that he didn't want to be part of a website that affords Kelso from "That '70s Show" over 6.5 million followers.
