Following his loss to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121, a bloody Brock Lesnar stood inside the Octagon with UFC commentator Joe Rogan.
When Rogan inquired if Lesnar would learn from his mistakes and come back stronger, Lesnar replied, “That’s what a champion does, right?”
Lesnar recently appeared on ESPN while doing press for his stint as a coach on season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter.
His loss to Velasquez was one of the subjects that was touched upon.
“I think the most important thing for me is, watching the fight again, finding the things I did right and moving on with that.”
Less than six months removed from his defeat, his response as to how he will handle the situation seems to have taken quite a turn. He's gone from wanting to learn from his mistakes and come back stronger, to looking just at what he did correctly when he fought Velasquez.
Taken at face value, Lesnar’s response is fairly revealing. It shows a reluctance to admit that mistakes were made in the fight with Velasquez.
A popular refrain that gets bandied about quite often is, “Evolve or die,” and Lesnar has seemingly been reluctant to take that phrase to heart.
Lesnar will face Junior dos Santos on June 11 at UFC 131 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
If Lesnar has not learned from the errors he made in his last two fights, he may be in for a shock when he faces a striker as powerful as Dos Santos.
In the end, the question that will hang in the air, unanswered until Lesnar and Dos Santos meet is, "Does Brock Lesnar have the mind of a champion or is he destined to repeat the mistakes he made in the past?"
