It's tempting to say that Fernando Rodney was throwing batting practice on Sunday, except in BP they actually throw strikes. Rodney threw 20 pitches to Royals hitters, 13 of which were out of the zone. He faced five batters, walked three, and exited after allowing a two-run double to Wilson Betemit.
We just had a preemptive Rodney discussion, and there's not much more to add. Jordan Walden pitched the eighth on Sunday, posting his usual line: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 2 Ks. He has the traditional closer's arsenal and looks like he belongs in the ninth. But that's Mike Scioscia's call. If Scott Downs (toe) weren't on the DL, he would be my primary fantasy add. Since he is, I'm adding and FAABing Walden.
We should note that Kevin Jepsen cleaned up Rodney's mess on Sunday, pitching 1.2 scoreless (also K-less) innings. That effort lowered his season ERA to 9.00 and his WHIP to 3.00, so it's not as if he's been lights-out through three games. Hisanori Takahashi is the only lefty in the Angels' bullpen while Downs is rehabbing, so it seems unlikely that he'd move to the closer's role.
So: Walden is my add. Jepsen can't be completely ruled out. And Downs is currently broken, but improving. Feel free to share your preferred pickup in comments…
