Rory McIlroy Shoots A 7 On 10th Hole Of The Masters
Rory McIlroy still clung to a one-stroke lead when he teed off on the 10th hole, but as soon as he hit the ball, you knew he wasn't going to keep it.
The ball sailed left over towards some cabins that nobody seems to have known about before. From there it was just bad shot after bad shot before finally tapping in for his triple bogey and falling two hots behind the new leaders.
It was shades of Jean Van de Velde at the 1999 British Open when he lost a three-stroke lead on the very last hole, choosing to hit the driver off the tee instead of laying up safely.
Obviously, McIlroy's mistakes aren't nearly as monumental as Van de Veld's, and they didn't come on the very last whole of the major he was assured of winning, and McIlroy still has a chance to redeem himself, but the shot of him standing over by those cabins was so eerily familiar to Van de Veld standing in the wee burn with his socks and shoes off, contemplating whether to hit the ball out of the water.
Let's hope that McIlroy can come back from this, whether it's over the rest of the Masters or for his career. This is the kind of mistake that can stick with you for years.
Update: Okay, with the way this collapse is continuing, it's starting to be more Greg Norman than Jean Van de Velde. Poor kid.
