Every so often during the MLB season and specifically before the trade deadline, teams involve themselves in blockbuster deals that shake up the landscape for both teams involved. In rarer instances, the blockbuster deal may involve more than two teams.
On July 31, 2007, the Atlanta Braves sent rookie catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and four minor-leaguers to Texas for the powerful, switch-hitting Mark Teixeira and left-handed reliever Ron Mahay. The Braves were 4 1/2 games behind the New York Mets in the NL East at the time.
On July 31, 2004, the Boston Red Sox were involved in a four-team deal that sent shortstop Nomar Garciaparra to the Chicago Cubs with Single A outfield prospect Matt Murton and received two former Gold Glovers, shortstop Orlando Cabrera from the Montreal Expos and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz from the Twins.
The trade allowed the Red Sox to finally end their 86-year World Series drought that October.
Now, Mark Bowman of MLB.com speculates whether or not the Chicago White Sox and Atlanta Braves could possibly be involved in a blockbuster deal this month.
Presumably, the Atlanta Braves would get Juan Pierre, who has recently heated up for the White Sox. The Braves have long been rumored to be searching for outfield help, and have the pitching to be able to pull off a deal.
Bowman also tweeted that he would be shocked if the Braves didn't pull off a significant deal before the trade deadline.
