Look out! Fausto fall down, go boom in Indians? win over Reds

American League pitchers batting during interleague play has led to some memorable follies. Perhaps the most infamous example is when Chien-Ming Wang suffereda torn tendon in his right foot while running the bases for the Yankees in a 2008 game at Houston.

Add Fausto Carmona's tumble at first base to the "Yakety Sax" highlight reel. During the third inning of the Cleveland Indians' 5-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds, the big right-hander tripped while running hard to beat out a bunt and took a hard spill over the bag.

Carmona left the game with a strained quadriceps muscle. But afterwards, it was clear that he sustained more damage from the fall. As Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer described, Carmona also sported bandages on his left arm.

Not only did he strain his right quadriceps muscle, which will probably put him on the disabled list, but after the game he looked like a guy who'd dumped his Harley-Davidson and was being treated for a bad case of road rash.

In addition, Carmona had the index and middle fingers on his right hand taped together. That was due to the webbing between his fingers splitting when he knocked down a hard chopper hit back to the mound by the Reds' Homer Bailey. Carmona was able to field the ball and throw to first for the out, but manager Manny Acta wasn't sure he could pitch after that.

Carmona was re-evaluated on Sunday morning and the news was as bad as his fall. He's headed to the 15-day disabled list with a strained thigh.
