Diamondbacks Use No. 43 Pick in 2011 MLB Draft on Andrew Chafin
The 2011 MLB Draft is currently under way on MLB Network. Pick by pick, the future of each and every team is getting brighter and brighter. With a bit of luck, the players whose names are being called will develop into the superstars of tomorrow.
The Arizona Diamondbacks added a pair of talented arms very early on in the first round of the draft, as they took UCLA righty Trevor Bauer with the No. 3 pick and then nabbed high school flamethrower Archie Bradley with the No. 7 pick.
With the No. 43 pick in the sandwich round, it was more of the same for the D-Backs, as they took Kent State lefty Andrew Chafin.
After missing the 2010 season recovering from Tommy John surgery, Chafin returned in 2011 and immediately started throwing 95 mph, though his fastball rests in the 91-92 range. His offspeed pitches need some work, but the good news is that Chafin's fastball moves a ton.
Because Chafin has a funky leg kick, the bullpen is probably in his future. But given his stuff, that's not a bad thing. At worst, he'll be a lefty specialist, with a chance of becoming a closer or an eighth-inning setup guy.
