Five Mexican national team players have been sent home from the Gold Cup after testing positive for Clenbuterol, a stimulant used in inhalers to fight breathing disorders. First-choice goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, along with Francisco Javier Rodriguez, Antonio Naelson "Sinha," Christian "Hobbit" Bermudez and Edgar Duenas all tested positive and could now face bans of up to a year.
From Soccer by Ives:
In a press conference held on Thursday, the Mexican Football Federation speculated that the players consumed chicken that was tainted with the drug and will request that the team be allowed to field replacement players for the rest of the Gold Cup. The removals come just one day after defender Ricardo Osorio also left the team due to an injury.
Mexico has had problems with Clenbuterol in meat for some time now, so the tainted chicken excuse, as goofy as it sounds, could actually be the truth. Somewhere, Kolo Toure is nibbling on his wife's diet pills, kind of happy that he isn't alone.
