Vancouver public enemy No. 1 and Bostonian Kenny Florian took on Diego Nunes in his debut at featherweight, and both fighters came out cautious but kicking in round one.
Nunes looked solid and scored a shot—take down early and right-hand connected, knocking Kenny down at the end of the round.
Nunes is getting the better of exchanges, and Florian can’t take him down.
He finally got top position on Nunes and worked hard for mount where he controlled most of the round.
Won Round 1 with very little damage to either fighter. Diego looked to have a small amount of blood trickling from behind his ear, but it had little effect on him coming for
Nunes looked like the tired fighter, and Florian took him down and got top position on him early in Round 3. Kenny is worked for elbows and mount, and Nunes was too tired to respond. While Kenny did little damage while on top, he dominated position enough to score. When they returned to their feet, Florian’s jab took over to score the rest of the fight.
"Conditioning was not an issue in this fight at all, and I think I performed very well tonight." He told UFC Press. "The most difficult part of this fight was the training camp. It was the toughest of my life."
With the win, Florian does set up his desired match with champ Jose Aldo, but he is going to have to improve his game to beat him.
Nunes gave a good showing and made some fans this week with his performance and will stay at the top of the division. He will have to improve his conditioning in his next fight against a top guy.
