Jim Irsay: Colts Won't Pursue Free Agent Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha

INDIANAPOLIS -- It is now clear at least one direction the Indianapolis Colts won't be going this offseason.

In keeping with a long-standing organizational approach, they won't be signing the best free-agent cornerback.

In fact, they won't even pursue him.

While many observers consider Nnamdi Asomugha of the Oakland Raiders one of the NFL's best cornerbacks -- and likely the best available player at the position in free agency -- Colts owner and chief executive officer Jim Irsay said the Colts won't try to sign him him.

Irsay made the announcement on his Twitter account early Tuesday.

"I'm not signing asomugha," Irsay tweeted. "We play cover 2 n develop and keep r own thru the draft..its worked well 4 us (and the Steelers) The cap restricts."

The Colts, who this past season made the postseason for an NFL record-tying ninth consecutive season, for the past decade have played a Cover 2 style of defensive coverage, and -- as Irsay emphasized in the tweet -- they long have eschewed the free-agent market in favor of drafting and developing their own players.
