Packers' James Starks Goes From Anonymous to Essential

He was the star player on a state championship high school basketball team that produced a future NBA first-round pick. He was the lead running back on a college football team that made Turner Gill into a hot coaching prospect. He has overcome surgery that erased his senior season, bounced back from a different injury that wiped out half of his NFL rookie season, and worked his way up from fourth on the depth chart.

James Starks is the Cinderella story of the NFL playoffs, rising from the aforementioned humble beginnings to the top of this postseason's rushing list and lending an unexpected helping hand to the Green Bay Packers' trip to the Super Bowl.

In doing so, he has expanded the Packers' fan base to the south (Lawrence, Kan., where Gill now coaches), southwest (Orangeburg, S.C., where his former running backs coach, Lee Chambers, now works) and east (Niagara Falls, N.Y., his hometown).
