LAS VEGAS _ There was a lot of buzz surrounding Celestino Cabellero fighting on the undercard of the Juan Manuel Marquez-Michael Katisidis fight. He's either not that good or wilted a bit under the pressure of fighting on HBO. Caballero, moving up to fight a solid opponent in Jason Litzau, lost a split decision 94-96, 93-97 and 96-94.
It's arguably the best win of Litzau's career. He was crushed in his first big step up against Robert Guerrero. The St. Paul, Minn. native has now won five straight.
It was just the second loss of Caballero's career. He thought the scores were out of line. The Panamanian said Litzau (28-2, 21 KOs) was running the whole fight.
That wasn't really the case. In fact, it was Caballero (34-2) who didn't fight with much pace down the stretch. Fighting at 130 pounds for the first time, he actually had trouble making the weight. He was very upright and stationary from the middle of the fight on. It made him an easy target for Litzau's overhand right. He got clubbed dozens of times throughout the fight resulting in some swelling around his left eye.
The Yahoo! boxing blog scored it 96-94 for Caballero. If punch stats mean anything, Compubox had Caballero outlanding Litzau 197-130. He was also good on 44 percent of his punches to just 25 percent for Litzau. Litzau was closer on the power punching front, but he still got outlanded 117-103.
Caballero was a super bantamweight world champ from 2005-2009. Since then he's fought at 125 and 130. He didn't possess a lot of pop and looked slow at times. Maybe junior lightweight is simply too big for him.
