ITF will give Pete Sampras duplicate Davis Cup trophies

If Pete Sampras can't recover the hundreds of trophies, medals and pieces of memorabilia that were recently stolen from a rented storage space, he won't be completely empty handed. The International Tennis Federation announced Thursday that it would award Sampras with a replica trophy from each of the two Davis Cup victories he was a part of as a member of the United States team.

“We were sorry to learn of the theft of so many of Pete Sampras’ trophies," ITF president Francesco Ricci Bitti wrote in a statement. "We know how special a Davis Cup victory is for a player, and if he is unable to recover the loss of his two Davis Cup trophies, we would like to offer him a replica trophy in recognition of his outstanding record in the event.”

It would likely be small consolation -- sometimes the trophy itself is secondary to the memory that accompanies it -- but it's a nice gesture nonetheless.
