March Madness 2011 will get underway with the new format, which includes four official first round games that will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday.
One of Wednesday's matchups will feature two teams who were on the bubble right up until Selection Sunday. In fact, many critics do not believe that either team was worthy of a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
But regardless of popular belief, the USC Trojans and VCU Rams will both assume the No. 11 seed for now as they meet for the opportunity to face the No. 6 Georgetown Hoyas on Friday in the second round.
USC Will have their head coach - Kevin O'Neill - back on their bench for this game following a one game suspension in the Pac 10 Tournament. O'Neill and his wife got into an exchange with an Arizona booster. Although no one has said publicly, O'Neill could very well be fighting for his job.
Personally, I don't think he has a chance to save it, and that includes the slim possibility that the Trojans cut down the nets in Houston. He should be fired following the NCAA Tournament.
Ultimately, I do see O'Neill getting the chance to fight for his job for at least one more game. The Trojans will be too much for the Rams with the strong play of Nikola Vucevic. He is a very important inside presence, and the Rams will struggle to defend him and his 17.3 PPG and 10.2 RPG.
But if you are looking for a player to watch for the Rams, make sure to check out VCU forward Jamie Skeen. Gregg Doyel of CBS Sports says that Skeen "is an example of what happens when a player finds his level. At Wake Forest, Skeen was just another guy on roster. After 1 seasons there he transferred to VCU, where he became a star this season at 15.3 PPG and 7.5 RPG."
Even with the solid play of Skeen, the Trojans win this one and get rewarded by facing the Hoyas after just one days rest.
