Liverpool get cosmic (in)justice for beachball incident

Darren Bent scored a goal last season with a shot deflected off a beachball thrown by one of Liverpool's own young fans. The referee let it stand, making it the difference in a 1-0 Sunderland win. Liverpool supporters were understandably upset. Some saw it as a sign that everyone was against them, others merely took it as a cosmic conspiracy.

But sometimes things have a way of evening out in the long run and in the first half of Sunday's match between the two sides, it kind of did. Sunderland defender John Mensah appeared to take Liverpool's Jay Spearing down distinctly outside the box. Yet, on the advice of his assistant, the referee awarded a penalty, which Dirk Kuyt convert to put Liverpool up 1-0. This time, Sunderland fans felt victimized and cheated while Liverpool fans celebrated and didn't ask questions.

Taking the day's misery a step further for Sunderland's Ghanaian faction, Liverpool's second goal of the 2-0 win was scored by none other than Luis Suarez -- the most hated man in Ghana (according to Asamoah Gyan). Plus there was Sulley Muntari having to leave the match in just the 19th minute with an injury and Mensah getting sent off in the 82nd. Still, like Liverpool, maybe one day they'll get their taste payback, too. Or not.
