Juan Fernandez Knocks Down Buzzer-Beating Jumper to Take Out Penn State
Juan Fernandez watched Penn State guard Talor Battle knock down a game-tying three pointer with 11 seconds left in Temple's clash with the Nittany Lions.
After a quick timeout, the Owls' star went out and beat him at his own game. Fernandez knocked down the game-winning jumper with .4 seconds left to give Temple a 66-64 win over their in-state rivals.
Temple and Penn State came in with two of the most formidable defenses in basketball, but the offenses got off to fast starts in this one. The Nittany Lions jumped out to a 22-13 lead midway through the first half, but watched as Temple chipped away at the lead, eventually taking a 35-33 halftime lead.
The two teams would continue to trade the lead back and forth, as neither team built much of a lead. Penn State was led by Battle, while the Owls saw Fernandez and Ramone Moore take over the scoring burden.
Fernandez eventually drained a pair of free throws, to give the Owls a 64-61 lead with 28 seconds left, only to watch as Battle knocked down a long three to tie the game.
After a timeout, Fernandez brought the ball up court and elevated just inside the three-point line, banging home the game winner with four-tenths of a second left.
Fernandez and Moore ultimately finished with 23 points, as did Battle for the Nittany Lions. Tim Frazier had 15 points for Penn State, while David Jackson added 14 points in the loss.
Temple moves on to take on the winner of the San Diego State-Northern Colorado game in the second round of the tournament on Saturday.
