Jim Martin has been apprehended. The husband of former female boxing star, Christy Martin, is accused of shooting and stabbing his wife.
On Nov. 23, the day of the alleged crime, Martin called family members and indicated he was under some mental duress.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, Christy told her husband of 19 years that she was leaving to be with a woman:
The records show Christy Martin, 42, returned home Nov. 23 after spending the night away, possibly with a woman described as a longtime friend with whom she is now in a romantic relationship.
The records released Wednesday also show Jim Martin may have been stalking his wife, spying on her and threatening to "destroy" her career and reputation by releasing videos on the Internet.
Christy Martin was speaking on the phone in her bedroom when her husband entered the room.
[...] her husband came in with something behind his back, according to an interview with a detective in the emergency room at Florida Hospital Apopka.
"She said it was a knife with a…blade," the report stated. "They fought in the bedroom and he had a black handgun in his pocket."
Christy Martin said she remembered Jim Martin trying to fire the gun, but thought it had misfired. At some point during the struggle, she ran out the front door and into the street.
Jim Martin, on the run from the police for a week, was charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a weapon. Based on a tip, Martin was found Tuesday hiding in a storage shed close to his home. Brandishing a knife, he appeared to have self-inflicted wounds.
That was nothing compared to the injuries suffered by his wife.
On the night of the attack, she ran from the house holding a pink handgun. After she flagged down a motorist, Christy Martin was transported to a local hospital where police found her with blood on both cheeks, in her hair and around her ears. She had at least two stab wounds. One in the chest and another in the leg, was described as being down to the bone. X-rays also revealed a metal object that doctors said appeared to be a bullet.
Nicknamed "The Coal Miner's Daughter," Christy Martin gained worldwide fame as the most heavily promoted fighter in the history of female boxing. She fought on several Don King pay-per-views in the early 90's and was once on the undercard of a Mike Tyson fight. With a 49-5-3 record, she last fought in Sept. of 2009. Her husband was her trainer and publicist.
