Sean Avery, N.Y. Rangers Trouble-Maker, Speaks Out in Favor of Same-Sex Marriage

New York Rangers forward Sean Avery made headlines this weekend when it surfaced that he had spoken out in support of same-sex marriage in a video for the ?New Yorkers for Marriage Equality? campaign, which is being organized by a gay-rights organization called Human Rights Campaign.

Despite being bashed by many throughout his career for his controversial actions both on and off the ice?everyone remembers Avery?s ?sloppy seconds? comment about then-Calgary Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf dating Avery?s former girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert?this seems like a turn in character for Avery.

?I treat everyone the way I want to be treated, and that applies to marriage,? says Avery in the video, which is being broadcast all over the New York metropolitan area.

?Committed couples should be able to marry the person they love. Join me in supporting marriage equality.?

Several other celebrities and New Yorkers have also taken part in the marriage-equality videos, including Bill Clinton, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and actors Julianne Moore and Sam Waterston.
