San Francisco 49ers Should Let Jim Harbaugh Choose Quarterbacks

49er’s Harbaugh Final Decision on 49ers Quarterbacks

The San Francisco 49ers leadership may have stepped into a tug-of-war regarding the No. 7 selection in the 2011 NFL Draft in April.

Jim Harbaugh's comments regarding his study session on quarterback Alex Smith authenticates his knowledge on which quarterbacks should be on the 49ers roster.

He stated that he’s been studying film on Smith, and he believes Smith can be a good quarterback in the National Football League.

Harbaugh has 15 years NFL playing experience and clearly knows what it takes to be successful at the position, and the magnitude of preparation involved in developing a game plan that will give the 49ers quarterbacks the best chance to win each week.

The NFL Combine and pre-draft workouts creates opportunities for Harbaugh to quiz the quarterbacks for their abilities to read NFL defensive schemes and the progressive passing tree it takes to run the West Coast offense.

His prior playing experience gives him the insight on which fourth, fifth or sixth-round pick can possibly develop into franchise quarterback like New England Patriots Tom Brady, who was sixth-round pick in 2000 NFL Draft.

Many current and former NFL coaches have had tremendous success coaching players who played the same position as they did during their playing days.

Green Bay Packers linebacker coach Kevin Greene is also experiencing the same maturation process in developing the career of Clay Mathews. Greene is a former Pro Bowl outside linebacker who played the same position as Mathews.

"I think everybody knows his genealogy and bloodlines," Packers outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene said of Clay III. "But, just listening to him talk, he's on a mission that he wants to stand on his own and be considered a great player in his own right."

Mike Singletary, a Hall of Fame linebacker and former 49ers head coach, had an opportunity to work directly with Patrick Willis at the 2007 Senior Bowl. The 10-time Pro Bowl linebacker knew immediately that Willis had instincts to be a great one in the NFL.

"I was excited about his attitude, his personality and his approach to the game," Singletary said. "It reminded me of (Lewis). I was pleasantly surprised when I went to Baltimore that Ray was so eager to absorb anything that I could tell him," said Singletary.

San Francisco 49ers G.M. Trent Baalke says the future 49ers quarterback “is not on the roster." He stated during the 49ers Harbaugh introductory press conference. “I make the final decisions on the 49ers 53-man roster."

This indicates he’d like to draft a quarterback at the No. 7 selection. Baalke will have to adjust his thinking and lean heavily on Harbaugh to choose the quarterbacks that will be best able to implement his “West Coast” offensive system.

Harbaugh has the knowledge, passion and determination to make the right draft selection, and he’ll make the 49ers quarterbacks successful in own way. His recent hiring of quarterback coach Geep Chryst will play big factor in the synergies it takes to get the quarterbacks prepared to play in the NFL.

Chryst has 19 years of NFL experience, including coaching Harbaugh, whom he coached during Harbaugh’s final two seasons with the San Diego Chargers in 1999 and 2000.

This is a brilliant move by Harbaugh, because Chryst has recent experience in coaching NFL tight ends, and the keys to success will be the communication between current 49ers Pro Bowl tight end Vernon Davis and the new 49ers quarterback.

The fans are hoping the 49ers don’t make the same mistake they did in the 2005 NFL draft. Mike Nolan, former 49ers head coach, chose Alex Smith over Green Bay Packers Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers, because he felt he had better mobility and a stronger arm.
